Dr. Stewart joined the Upjohn Institute as a Research Fellow in 2025. His current research focuses on the impact of accounting for occupations and tasks into estimates of productivity at the establishment level. 

Dr. Stewart’s past research has examined a wide range of topics including: contracts under uncertainty, inequality, obesity, productivity, survey design, and issues related to the measurement of work hours and time use. Dr. Stewart’s research has been published in Labour Economics, Demography, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Populations Economics, Economics and Human Biology, and other other journals and book chapters. 

Prior to joining Upjohn, Dr. Stewart was a Senior Research Economist at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). He received a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MA and PhD from UCLA. Dr. Stewart is also a Research Fellow at the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA) and a member of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth (CRIW).
