In a new report published by Brookings, Upjohn Institute President Michael Horrigan considers the question of how to improve the trust we have in the data produced by the federal statistical system. Trust in the government has fallen dramatically since the 1960s, and currently rests near record lows. It is hardly a stretch to suggest that a lack of trust in the federal government in general can easily turn into a lack of trust in the statistics that federal agencies put out.

In his report, Horrigan explores the nature of trust in the federal statistical system, why some of the measures of trust are declining over time, and several ways that this can be remedied.
