Thousands of eighth-grade students from Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties will explore future career opportunities at MiCareerQuest Southwest, October 21–22 at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center. Michigan Works! Southwest, part of the Upjohn Institute’s Center for Workforce Innovation and Solutions, is a key partner in the annual event, working alongside the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (KRESA), educators, employers, and other community partners to connect students with career opportunities across Southwest Michigan.

The event gives students a firsthand look at careers that are shaping the region’s economy. Through interactive exhibits and demonstrations, students can explore opportunities in information technology, health sciences, manufacturing, and professional trades while learning directly from professionals working in those fields.

Local employers and industry representatives will showcase the tools, technology, and equipment used in their workplaces, giving students hands-on exposure to careers that are critical to the region’s economy.

“MiCareerQuest is about opening students’ eyes to possibilities and helping them see how their interests and talents can translate into meaningful careers,” said Jakki Bungart-Bibb, director of Michigan Works! Southwest. “Through our partnership with KRESA, local employers, educators, and community organizations, we’re connecting classroom learning and real-world opportunities, inspiring students to explore the many possibilities available to them.”

In addition to meeting working professionals, students will participate in interactive activities that demonstrate skills used in a variety of occupations. The event also highlights opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, apprenticeships, and other pathways that can help students prepare for future careers.

Representatives from colleges, universities, career and technical education programs, and training providers will also be available to help students understand how education and workforce training connect to career success.

MiCareerQuest Southwest is made possible through the collaboration of KRESA, Michigan Works! Southwest, the Calhoun Intermediate School District, local school districts, employers, industry leaders, educational institutions, and other community partners. Through its partnership, Michigan Works! Southwest helps plan and staff the event and provides financial support to help make these hands-on career exploration experiences possible for students throughout the region.
