The Michigan Works! Impact Awards took place Wednesday, April 8, at the state capitol in Lansing, honoring individuals and organizations that strengthen Michigan’s economy through job creation and talent development.

Michigan Works! Southwest recognized Essence, whose journey through the Partnership. Accountability. Training. Hope. (PATH) program highlights the impact of coordinated support and career-focused training. Beginning the program in September 2024 as a single parent pursuing advancement in health care, Essence completed medical assistant training at Ross Medical in January 2025—graduating at the top of her class.

With support from her career coach and PATH resources, including assistance with child care, transportation, and other essentials, Essence overcame key barriers to success. She gained hands-on experience through an internship at Borgess Neurology and accepted a full-time medical assistant position at Bronson Internal Medicine, earning $21.56 per hour. Essence has since achieved self-sufficiency, completed the PATH program, and is continuing her education by pursuing a nursing degree at Kalamazoo Valley Community College while working full time.
