Every February, Michigan Works! Southwest joins partners across the state in celebrating Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, recognizing the critical role CTE programs play in preparing Michigan residents for in-demand careers and strengthening the state’s workforce.

Career and technical education provides students and job seekers with hands-on training and practical skills needed to succeed in high-demand fields such as health care, manufacturing, information technology, and the skilled trades. By blending classroom instruction with real-world experience, CTE programs help individuals earn industry-recognized credentials and build pathways to good-paying jobs.

Jakki Bungart-Bibb, director of Michigan Works! Southwest, said, "We know that a strong workforce begins with strong education and training. CTE programs are essential to Michigan’s economic future, helping employers find skilled talent while giving individuals the tools they need to succeed and advance in their careers.”

CTE programs are a key driver of workforce development and economic growth in Michigan. These programs:

  • Prepare individuals for in-demand careers by combining academic learning with hands-on training.
  • Connect employers with job-ready talent, helping address workforce shortages across key industries.
  • Create pathways to good-paying jobs through industry credentials and certifications.
  • Support lifelong learning, offering opportunities for upskilling and reskilling as industries evolve.

Together with other Michigan Works! agencies, Michigan Works! Southwest actively supports and expands access to CTE opportunities by connecting students and job seekers with training programs, tuition assistance, apprenticeships, and career coaching. Agencies also work closely with employers to align training with workforce needs and support career exploration through job fairs, workshops, and industry partnerships.

“Through strong partnerships and continued support, CTE helps build a skilled workforce that drives innovation, strengthens the economy, and expands opportunity statewide,” Bungart-Bibb said.
